Rewire Your Brain and ReCreate Your Life

Interview with  Dr. Joe Dispenza

His role in the landmark quantum physics film, What the Bleep Do We Know!?, made Dr. Joe Dispenza a metaphysical “rock star.” His groundbreaking mind/body connection work in the bestselling book, Evolve Your Brain, has earned him a reputation as one of the leading authorities on the interconnectedness of the brain, the mind, the body and consciousness. His ability to inspire and motivate audiences to re-think their futures has made him a much-sought-after international speaker and workshop facilitator.

He is also a working chiropractor, and a living testament to the transformative power of the brain. When he invites you in his new book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, to “lose your mind and create a new one,” he isn’t asking you to do anything he hasn’t done himself.

At age 23, facing the possibility of permanent paralysis after a spine-crushing bicycle accident, Joe Dispenza was faced with a life-changing decision. His doctors believed that his only hope of walking again was a surgical procedure which, even if successful could leave him permanently disabled and in constant pain. Dispenza refused the procedure, opting, instead, to recreate his own physical body by literally “changing his mind.” Ten weeks later, without surgery, he was back at work, completely healed and pain-free.

When I interviewed Joe in 2008, we met in his chiropractic office in the small town of Rainier, Washington. Things were a little quieter back then. This time, we connected by phone, as he wrapped up a week long conference in Arizona and headed south for a well-earned winter break.

Although it hardly seems possible, I found that he is even more committed to changing lives today than he was two and half years ago. With a new book on the horizon, a DVD series, online teleconferences, and a packed personal appearance schedule, Dr. Joe is out to change the way the world thinks.

I understand you’re now touring with a workshop series. Could you tell us a little bit about it?

After I did What The Bleep Do We Know!? and again after I wrote Evolve Your Brain, the feedback I got was, “Great, I now know I can change my mind, but how do I do that?” Well, we need to unlearn the emotional states that drive our thinking and then reinvent the new self.

I created a workshop that allows people to get the content and the information about the science of change — how change is possible — and then teach them how to use it.

Level 1 is kind of like reading the book on how to ski, taking a lesson and then going down the slope a few times. With Level 2, it’s like you’ve been going down the slopes a while and now your interest centers around sharpening your skills. In Level 2, we do 5–6 meditations in less than 48 hours. People are carving a path between the conscious mind and the subconscious. And they’re working on beliefs and perceptions; they’re working on bringing the body into the present moment; they’re working on conditioning the body to a new mind.

Level 3 is for people who want more. It’s designed for graduates of the previous two levels, who are ready to take the quantum leap into a whole new way of being — one that integrates your mind, body and spirit fully so you can access and harness the most powerful source of energy on the planet — the quantum field.

Let’s start with the most basic and probably the most complex question about accessing the quantum field. What is consciousness?

Consciousness is a level of awareness about ourselves and the environment. When we pay attention to what we’re experiencing in the outside world and what we’re experiencing in our inside world, and then use our brain to create meaning between the two, we are conscious. Consciousness is awareness. When we are aware of ourselves it allows us to begin to pay attention to how we think, how we act and how we feel. Because we can notice and observe those things, it means we actually have a choice in modifying our behavior.

The more consciousness you have, the more awareness you have about yourself, your environment, and yourself in the environment. More consciousness also means you are better able to adapt to conditions in your life and make changes to meet those environmental conditions. If someone is unconscious, they keep repeating or re-confronting the same issues over and over again without even thinking about modifying something about themselves to produce a different outcome.

Consciousness allows us to take the shortcut to evolve our actions, our thoughts and our emotions so we can actually, in a very nonlinear way, take the shortcut to a greater level of evolution.

You talk about consciousness as being both universal and personal. Could you explain what that means for us?

There are two elements of consciousness. If you talk about it in terms of the quantum model, everything at its most fundamental level is made up of energy and of thought. And energy carries information; frequency carries information. You could say that everything is made up of 99.99 percent nothing, and that “no thing” is an energy.

Then you could say that this energy that is carrying information has intelligence, and that it is the very fabric of the Universe. At its fundamental level it is consciousness and energy, and it is always coalescing and organizing itself into material form. That consciousness that’s creating Universes, that’s keeping the planets rotating around the sun is the same consciousness that’s keeping your heart beating and making 10 million cells every second. It’s also the same consciousness that allows a lily to bloom and a rose to flower. It’s both personal within us and Universal around us.

When we can marry the two, we are beginning to gain more control and empower ourselves as souls making their way back to Source.

Right now, so many people are living in Survival mode. Is creating a new life even possible when we’re overwhelmed by stress?

We have three kinds of stresses: physical stresses like trauma, accident, injury; chemical stresses like toxins, pesticides, pollutants, chemicals, preservatives, food allergies, influenza, heavy metals and such; and then we have emotional stresses like traffic jams, internet connections, second mortgages, single parenting, etc. Every single one of those stressors begins to knock the body out of homeostasis, out of balance.

The stress response is innately always trying to create internal order. If we keep knocking the body out of balance, and it doesn’t have a chance to return back to order, that imbalance becomes the new balance and now we’re headed for disease.

What makes us so unique as human beings is that we can turn on the stress response just by thought alone. If we know that the chemicals of stress disregulate and downregulate genes that create disease, that means that we can create our own diseases just by thought alone. So that begs the question, if our thoughts can make us sick, can our thoughts also make us well?

The chemicals of stress endorse the ego to become very selfish, very self-involved, very self-centered, very self-important, very self-aggrandizing and very self-serving.

When we’re living in stress, we obsess about our bodies, we obsess about things, we obsess about our environment, we obsess about time. And because we do, we live by the laws of the material world. We begin to feel disconnected from the quantum field; the emotions of stress create anger and aggression, fear and anxiety, shame and suffering, hopelessness, and powerlessness, and judgment and hatred.  Now most people’s thoughts are pretty much 90 percent within those emotions. Those stress chemicals bring us to a lower denominator.

What shifts when we move from Survival mode to Creative mode?

When we’re in creative mode (when we’re truly present and truly creating) we’re no longer trying to predict the future moment based on the past moment; we’re actually so present with what we’re doing, so focused on who we are, that we forget about ourselves. We’re so focused on what we’re attending to that there is no body; there is no thing; there is no time. We are now pure consciousness. The moment we slip into that space we move from being a somebody into being a nobody. We move from being selfish to self-less. The ego is now laid down and the survival centers are shut off.  That energy now moves right into the heart and we begin to feel inspired and lifted. We start to feel joyful because we’re making our way out of the mess, and that’s when we feel connected, that’s when we trust in an outcome that we can’t see or experience with our senses, but we know is coming.

How do we make that shift to creative empowerment?

The process of change requires unlearning and relearning. It requires breaking the habit of the old self and reinventing the new self. It requires pruning synaptic connections [in the brain] and then sprouting new connections. It requires literally unmemorizing an emotion and reconditioning your mind and body to a new mind or a new emotion. It means losing your mind and creating a new one or very simply said, changing your energy — using the same energy of anger, for example, and turning it into something else. And when we change our energy, of course, we change our life.

I realize there’s no simple answer to how long does it take to rewire your brain, but it’s easy to become discouraged when changes aren’t happening as quickly as we’d like them to.

There’s no real law. There are so many variables. It depends on people’s attention spans, how often they do it, how long they do it, the type of will they use to execute it, the kind of energy that they put to it, the amount of understanding and skill that they have to get beyond the analytical mind and into the subconscious, and so on.

I’ve seen people change in one day. They made up their mind that they no longer want to be the same person to such a degree that the decision [itself] was literally the experience that changed them.

I’d like to briefly touch on the power of intention. How big a part do our emotions play in setting an intention for a better life?

In the process of creation there is a balance between intention and surrender, and if you over-intend, that’s called “trying” (trying to control the outcome) and that doesn’t work in the quantum field. Then there is surrender which is trusting an outcome that already exists beyond your senses and letting your body emotionally move into what that would feel like. Then you give thanks before the event has taken place.

We know from the experiments that intention by itself does absolutely nothing. But when you couple it with an emotion, when you surrender to the emotion ahead of the actual event and don’t try to analyze it or figure out how it’s going to happen — and you just let go and believe — it works a whole lot better. It’s a balance. When our thoughts and feelings are aligned, or our mind and body are working together, we are in a state of Being. The Field responds to who we’re Being, not just what we think or feel, but what we’re actually thinking and feeling.

In his talks and workshops, “Dr. Joe” shares cutting edge scientific findings relating to the quantum world, mind, spontaneous healing and the biology of change — including the science behind the premise that our thoughts create our reality. His upcoming new book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One is due out in 2011.

What else is on the horizon for Joe Dispenza? He’s launching a new CD series and plans to offer monthly teleclasses. But he’s particularly excited about a new program he calls “Train the Trainers.” With this program he hopes to train others to take his message into both the corporate world and the psychotherapeutic community.

Miceal Ledwith

Dr. Micael Ledwith, L.Ph., L.D., D.D., LL.D (h.c) is an International Speaker, Author,  Theologian, and Scientist.

His research interests had always been in the fundamental areas of religious belief, seeking answers to the “Four Great Questions” as he liked to call them: “Who am I? Where do I come from? What should I do? and where am I going?”

Dr. Ledwith insights are on the leading-edge of science and spirituality, indicating a very different understanding of God and our place and purpose in creation.

Through Dr. Miceal Ledwith extensive research he is evolving and producing a new series of DVD, six of which have now been recorded.  This series starts to put words on the problems most thinking people have found with the traditional proposals about God, religion and human destiny. It is intended to chart a different course for human hopes and aspirations, based on the deepened and improved insights into the nature of reality which we have gained today.

He served as a Catholic priest, Professor of Theology and College President for over 25 years in Ireland. He was also adviser to Pope John Paul and is an instructor at Ramtha’s school of ancient wisdom.

Jesus promised that those who followed his message would do all the wonders he did and more. If this is not happening in todays Christianity it shows that something has gone very seriously awry. Few even realize that more than 80% of the life of Jesus is missing from the New Testament. Míceál Ledwiths lifelong study of the available sources had identified many gaps in the religions understanding of God and our place in the world. In particular it became clear that the Christian religions do not, as they claim, carry the revelation of a previously unknown message; but are based on fragments and corruptions of a rare and very ancient wisdom. The early Christian Church spent several centuries of tortured controversy trying to explain how God could have become man in Jesus the Christ. It should have focused instead on how the divine element in every man and woman could be effectively drawn forth.

What the (Bleep) Do We Know?, a lecture on mysticism and science mixed into a sort-of narrative. Marlee Matlin stars in the dramatic thread, about a sourpuss photographer who begins to question her perceptions. Interviews with quantum physics experts and New Age authors are cut into this story, offering a vaguely convincing (and certainly mind-provoking) theory about… well, actually, it sounds a lot like the Power of Positive Thinking, when you get down to it.

Down the Rabbit Hole utilizes cutting-edge DVD technology to create a unique version of the film with every viewing! The possibilities are endless…and so is the fun! Academy Award® winner Marlee Matlin is Amanda, a photographer suddenly transported into a metaphysical world of quantum mechanics, odd science and mind-bending phenomena. Guided by the world’s top physicists, engineers, biologists and mystics, she tumbles down the rabbit hole and gets a first-hand look at the fascinating links between science and spirituality in our everyday lives.

Lynne McTaggart

Lynne McTaggart is an internationally recognised spokesperson on consciousness, the new physics and the science of spirituality and the award winning author of six books, including The Intention Experiment and The Field, and now with her new release The Bond  creates a wonderful trilogy. The Intention Experiment and The Field have been published in eighteen and fourteen languages, respectively. She is also co-executive director of two publishing companies that publish some of the world’s most respected health and spiritual newsletters, including What Doctors Don’t Tell You and Living the Field. She lives in London.

This is the seminal work of the New Age, and one which provides a scientific explanation for psychic phenomena such as ESP, spiritual healing and remote viewing. It explains that everything is connected by the Zero Point Field (ZPF), a sea of energy that reconciles mind with matter, classic science with quantum physics, and science with religion. The ZPF is “a cobweb of energy exchange”, as Lynne describes it, and she calls on numerous quantum physicists to provide an impressive canon of research data and discoveries to support the theory. The Field has inspired thousands of people from various walks of life, including religious leaders, physicists, healers and, most important of all, those who have been seeking scientific evidence for their innate sense that they are not separate, and that they do not live in isolation from others and the earth.

Website – Intention Experiment

This book seeks to answer the most fundamental question left open by The Field: if we are connected, can our thoughts and intentions affect and change the world and things ‘out there’? To find out, Lynne again carried out exhaustive investigations, including interviews with numerous physicists, and has collated the most impressive data yet on intention, or the power of thought. Not only does she provide compelling evidence for intention, she also explains the very best techniques for achieving success with your intentions – and she invites the reader to participate in a series of web-based intention experiments that have now become the largest mind-over-matter studies ever undertaken.

Website – The Bond

The Bond is the culmination of her groundbreaking work. It offers a completely new, scientific story of life and the human experience, one that challenges the very way we conceive of ourselves and our world. The Bond shows that the essential impulse of all life is a will to connect rather than a drive to compete. In fact, we are inescapably connected, hardwired to each other at our most elemental level—from cells to whole societies. The desire to help others is so necessary that we experience it as one of our chief pleasures, as essential as eating and having sex, and we succeed and prosper only when we see ourselves as part of a greater whole. Every conflict that occurs—whether between husband and wife, social or racial groups, or nations—is resolved only when we can fully see and embrace the space—the bond—between us.

Masaru Emoto

Masaru Emoto was born in Yokohama in July 1943. He graduated from the Yokohama Municipal University where he studied International Relations. In 1986, he established the I.H.M. Corporation in Tokyo. In 1992, he received certification from the Open International University as a Doctor of Alternative Medicine. Subsequently, he was introduced to the concept of micro cluster water and Magnetic Resonance Analysis technology. He is currently the head of the I.H.M. General Research Institute, Inc., the President of I.H.M., Inc., and the chief representative of I.H.M.’s HADO Fellowship. In his first book, The Message from Water (in three volumes), Emoto documents his findings of what he calls “the true nature of water,” discovered in his study of the effects of human vibrational energy, thoughts, words, ideas, and music on the molecular structure of water. He has also publishedThe Message from Water, and his work was popularized through the movie, What the Bleep Do We Know!?

Emoto has discovered many differences in the crystalline structure of water collected from a variety of sources around the planet. Water from pristine mountain streams shows beautifully formed geometric designs when frozen, and polluted water shows definitively distorted and randomly formed crystalline structures. Emoto photographs these molecular changes in water by freezing droplets and magnifying them under a dark field microscope.
