Rewire Your Brain and ReCreate Your Life

Interview with  Dr. Joe Dispenza

His role in the landmark quantum physics film, What the Bleep Do We Know!?, made Dr. Joe Dispenza a metaphysical “rock star.” His groundbreaking mind/body connection work in the bestselling book, Evolve Your Brain, has earned him a reputation as one of the leading authorities on the interconnectedness of the brain, the mind, the body and consciousness. His ability to inspire and motivate audiences to re-think their futures has made him a much-sought-after international speaker and workshop facilitator.

He is also a working chiropractor, and a living testament to the transformative power of the brain. When he invites you in his new book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself, to “lose your mind and create a new one,” he isn’t asking you to do anything he hasn’t done himself.

At age 23, facing the possibility of permanent paralysis after a spine-crushing bicycle accident, Joe Dispenza was faced with a life-changing decision. His doctors believed that his only hope of walking again was a surgical procedure which, even if successful could leave him permanently disabled and in constant pain. Dispenza refused the procedure, opting, instead, to recreate his own physical body by literally “changing his mind.” Ten weeks later, without surgery, he was back at work, completely healed and pain-free.

When I interviewed Joe in 2008, we met in his chiropractic office in the small town of Rainier, Washington. Things were a little quieter back then. This time, we connected by phone, as he wrapped up a week long conference in Arizona and headed south for a well-earned winter break.

Although it hardly seems possible, I found that he is even more committed to changing lives today than he was two and half years ago. With a new book on the horizon, a DVD series, online teleconferences, and a packed personal appearance schedule, Dr. Joe is out to change the way the world thinks.

I understand you’re now touring with a workshop series. Could you tell us a little bit about it?

After I did What The Bleep Do We Know!? and again after I wrote Evolve Your Brain, the feedback I got was, “Great, I now know I can change my mind, but how do I do that?” Well, we need to unlearn the emotional states that drive our thinking and then reinvent the new self.

I created a workshop that allows people to get the content and the information about the science of change — how change is possible — and then teach them how to use it.

Level 1 is kind of like reading the book on how to ski, taking a lesson and then going down the slope a few times. With Level 2, it’s like you’ve been going down the slopes a while and now your interest centers around sharpening your skills. In Level 2, we do 5–6 meditations in less than 48 hours. People are carving a path between the conscious mind and the subconscious. And they’re working on beliefs and perceptions; they’re working on bringing the body into the present moment; they’re working on conditioning the body to a new mind.

Level 3 is for people who want more. It’s designed for graduates of the previous two levels, who are ready to take the quantum leap into a whole new way of being — one that integrates your mind, body and spirit fully so you can access and harness the most powerful source of energy on the planet — the quantum field.

Let’s start with the most basic and probably the most complex question about accessing the quantum field. What is consciousness?

Consciousness is a level of awareness about ourselves and the environment. When we pay attention to what we’re experiencing in the outside world and what we’re experiencing in our inside world, and then use our brain to create meaning between the two, we are conscious. Consciousness is awareness. When we are aware of ourselves it allows us to begin to pay attention to how we think, how we act and how we feel. Because we can notice and observe those things, it means we actually have a choice in modifying our behavior.

The more consciousness you have, the more awareness you have about yourself, your environment, and yourself in the environment. More consciousness also means you are better able to adapt to conditions in your life and make changes to meet those environmental conditions. If someone is unconscious, they keep repeating or re-confronting the same issues over and over again without even thinking about modifying something about themselves to produce a different outcome.

Consciousness allows us to take the shortcut to evolve our actions, our thoughts and our emotions so we can actually, in a very nonlinear way, take the shortcut to a greater level of evolution.

You talk about consciousness as being both universal and personal. Could you explain what that means for us?

There are two elements of consciousness. If you talk about it in terms of the quantum model, everything at its most fundamental level is made up of energy and of thought. And energy carries information; frequency carries information. You could say that everything is made up of 99.99 percent nothing, and that “no thing” is an energy.

Then you could say that this energy that is carrying information has intelligence, and that it is the very fabric of the Universe. At its fundamental level it is consciousness and energy, and it is always coalescing and organizing itself into material form. That consciousness that’s creating Universes, that’s keeping the planets rotating around the sun is the same consciousness that’s keeping your heart beating and making 10 million cells every second. It’s also the same consciousness that allows a lily to bloom and a rose to flower. It’s both personal within us and Universal around us.

When we can marry the two, we are beginning to gain more control and empower ourselves as souls making their way back to Source.

Right now, so many people are living in Survival mode. Is creating a new life even possible when we’re overwhelmed by stress?

We have three kinds of stresses: physical stresses like trauma, accident, injury; chemical stresses like toxins, pesticides, pollutants, chemicals, preservatives, food allergies, influenza, heavy metals and such; and then we have emotional stresses like traffic jams, internet connections, second mortgages, single parenting, etc. Every single one of those stressors begins to knock the body out of homeostasis, out of balance.

The stress response is innately always trying to create internal order. If we keep knocking the body out of balance, and it doesn’t have a chance to return back to order, that imbalance becomes the new balance and now we’re headed for disease.

What makes us so unique as human beings is that we can turn on the stress response just by thought alone. If we know that the chemicals of stress disregulate and downregulate genes that create disease, that means that we can create our own diseases just by thought alone. So that begs the question, if our thoughts can make us sick, can our thoughts also make us well?

The chemicals of stress endorse the ego to become very selfish, very self-involved, very self-centered, very self-important, very self-aggrandizing and very self-serving.

When we’re living in stress, we obsess about our bodies, we obsess about things, we obsess about our environment, we obsess about time. And because we do, we live by the laws of the material world. We begin to feel disconnected from the quantum field; the emotions of stress create anger and aggression, fear and anxiety, shame and suffering, hopelessness, and powerlessness, and judgment and hatred.  Now most people’s thoughts are pretty much 90 percent within those emotions. Those stress chemicals bring us to a lower denominator.

What shifts when we move from Survival mode to Creative mode?

When we’re in creative mode (when we’re truly present and truly creating) we’re no longer trying to predict the future moment based on the past moment; we’re actually so present with what we’re doing, so focused on who we are, that we forget about ourselves. We’re so focused on what we’re attending to that there is no body; there is no thing; there is no time. We are now pure consciousness. The moment we slip into that space we move from being a somebody into being a nobody. We move from being selfish to self-less. The ego is now laid down and the survival centers are shut off.  That energy now moves right into the heart and we begin to feel inspired and lifted. We start to feel joyful because we’re making our way out of the mess, and that’s when we feel connected, that’s when we trust in an outcome that we can’t see or experience with our senses, but we know is coming.

How do we make that shift to creative empowerment?

The process of change requires unlearning and relearning. It requires breaking the habit of the old self and reinventing the new self. It requires pruning synaptic connections [in the brain] and then sprouting new connections. It requires literally unmemorizing an emotion and reconditioning your mind and body to a new mind or a new emotion. It means losing your mind and creating a new one or very simply said, changing your energy — using the same energy of anger, for example, and turning it into something else. And when we change our energy, of course, we change our life.

I realize there’s no simple answer to how long does it take to rewire your brain, but it’s easy to become discouraged when changes aren’t happening as quickly as we’d like them to.

There’s no real law. There are so many variables. It depends on people’s attention spans, how often they do it, how long they do it, the type of will they use to execute it, the kind of energy that they put to it, the amount of understanding and skill that they have to get beyond the analytical mind and into the subconscious, and so on.

I’ve seen people change in one day. They made up their mind that they no longer want to be the same person to such a degree that the decision [itself] was literally the experience that changed them.

I’d like to briefly touch on the power of intention. How big a part do our emotions play in setting an intention for a better life?

In the process of creation there is a balance between intention and surrender, and if you over-intend, that’s called “trying” (trying to control the outcome) and that doesn’t work in the quantum field. Then there is surrender which is trusting an outcome that already exists beyond your senses and letting your body emotionally move into what that would feel like. Then you give thanks before the event has taken place.

We know from the experiments that intention by itself does absolutely nothing. But when you couple it with an emotion, when you surrender to the emotion ahead of the actual event and don’t try to analyze it or figure out how it’s going to happen — and you just let go and believe — it works a whole lot better. It’s a balance. When our thoughts and feelings are aligned, or our mind and body are working together, we are in a state of Being. The Field responds to who we’re Being, not just what we think or feel, but what we’re actually thinking and feeling.

In his talks and workshops, “Dr. Joe” shares cutting edge scientific findings relating to the quantum world, mind, spontaneous healing and the biology of change — including the science behind the premise that our thoughts create our reality. His upcoming new book, Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One is due out in 2011.

What else is on the horizon for Joe Dispenza? He’s launching a new CD series and plans to offer monthly teleclasses. But he’s particularly excited about a new program he calls “Train the Trainers.” With this program he hopes to train others to take his message into both the corporate world and the psychotherapeutic community.

New discoveries suggest that our world is the mirror of our beliefs. What we once believed is about to change! What would it mean to discover that the power to create joy, to heal suffering, and bring peace to nations lives inside of you? Are the miracles that we see in the quantum world actually showing us our greatest possibilities rather than our scientific limits Could the spontaneous healing of disease, an instant connection with everyone and everything, and even time travel, be our true heritage in the universe? Between 1993 and 2000, a series of groundbreaking experiments revealed dramatic evidence of a web of energy that connects everything in our lives and our world—the Divine Matrix. From the healing of our bodies, to the success of our careers, relationships, and the peace between nations, this new evidence demonstrates that we each hold the power to speak directly to the force that links all of creation. Join Gregg Braden on this extraordinary journey bridging science, spirituality and miracles through the Language of the Divine Matrix.

Fact: The end of such cycles in the past have heralded a time of dramatic change on Earth, as well as opportunity for those living on Earth—changes remembered in ancient traditions and now confirmed in the scientific record. What does 2012 mean for us today? History shows that World Age cycles of the past have triggered cataclysmic shifts in the Earth that have altered entire civilizations in the past. Today, the predictions for 2012 and what follows, range from an era of chaos and destruction to a thousand of years of peace and cooperation. What can we really expect from such a rare moment in time? New discoveries suggest that the message of the ancient timekeepers, merged with the best science of today, holds the answer to the mystery and the key to our future. The Bottom Line: If you know where you are in a cycle, then you know what to expect when it repeats!

Fact: The universe is made of a shared matrix of energy that underlies our Physical world. Fact: Belief is a language that “speaks” to this matrix. Scientific evidence reveals that heart-based belief affects everything from the healing of our bodies to the atoms of our world. Is it possible that we’re born with the power to reverse disease, create peace and abundance, and even change reality itself? As we face the greatest challenges of human history, these new discoveries suggest that we’re about to find out!

What would it mean to discover an ancient language—a literal message—coded into the DNA of life itself? What we once believed of our past is about to change… A message has been found within the molecules of life; deep within the DNA in each cell of our bodies. Through a remarkable discovery linking ancient alphabets to the elements of life, our genetic code now reads as a text message of healing and peace! The code in our cells includes the ancient name of God, and offers concrete evidence that we are an intentional species, related to one another and life itself, in the most intimate way imaginable. In this compelling work, Gregg Braden will share the life-changing discovery that led him from a successful career in Aerospace and Defense, to an extensive12-year study of the most honored traditions of humankind.

Bruce Liptonl

Bruce H. Lipton, PhD is an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. Stem cell biologist, bestselling author of The Biology of Belief and recipient of the 2009 Goi Peace Award, he has been a guest speaker on hundreds of TV and radio shows, as well as keynote presenter for national and international conferences.

Dr. Lipton began his scientific career as a cell biologist. He received his Ph.D. Degree from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville before joining the Department of Anatomy at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine in 1973. Dr. Lipton’s research on muscular dystrophy, studies employing cloned human stem cells, focused upon the molecular mechanisms controlling cell behavior. An experimental tissue transplantation technique developed by Dr. Lipton and colleague Dr. Ed Schultz and published in the journal Science was subsequently employed as a novel form of human genetic engineering.

In 1982, Dr. Lipton began examining the principles of quantum physics and how they might be integrated into his understanding of the cell’s information processing systems. He produced breakthrough studies on the cell membrane, which revealed that this outer layer of the cell was an organic homologue of a computer chip, the cell’s equivalent of a brain. His research at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, between 1987 and 1992, revealed that the environment, operating though the membrane, controlled the behavior and physiology of the cell, turning genes on and off. His discoveries, which ran counter to the established scientific view that life is controlled by the genes, presaged one of today’s most important fields of study, the science of epigenetics. Two major scientific publications derived from these studies defined the molecular pathways connecting the mind and body. Many subsequent papers by other researchers have since validated his concepts and ideas.

Dr. Lipton’s novel scientific approach transformed his personal life as well. His deepened understanding of cell biology highlighted the mechanisms by which the mind controls bodily functions, and implied the existence of an immortal spirit. He applied this science to his personal biology, and discovered that his physical well-being improved, and the quality and character of his daily life was greatly enhanced.

Dr. Lipton has taken his award-winning medical school lectures to the public and is currently a sought after keynote speaker and workshop presenter. He lectures to conventional and complementary medical professionals and lay audiences about leading-edge science and how it dovetails with mind-body medicine and spiritual principles. He has been heartened by anecdotal reports from hundreds of former audience members who have improved their spiritual, physical and mental well being by applying the principles he discusses in his lectures. He is regarded as one of the leading voices of the new biology.

We’ve all heard stories of people who’ve experienced seemingly miraculous recoveries from illness, but can the same thing happen for our world? According to pioneering biologist Bruce H. Lipton, it’s not only possible, it’s already occurring. In Spontaneous Evolution, this world-renowned expert in the emerging science of epigenetics reveals how our changing understanding of biology will help us navigate this turbulent period in our planet’s history and how each of us can participate in this global shift. By questioning the old beliefs that got us to where we are today and keep us stuck in the status quo, we can trigger the spontaneous evolution of our species that will usher in a brighter future.

With The Wisdom of Your Cells, this internationally recognized authority on cellular biology takes listeners on an in-depth exploration into the microscopic world, where new discoveries and research are revolutionizing the way we understand life, evolution, and consciousness. In this full-length audio course, Dr. Lipton shares his lucid and startling insights about the building blocks of life, and how each one of our cells has far greater innate intelligence than we once believed.

Since the publication of The Biology of Belief, Dr. Bruce Lipton has received widespread acclaim as one of the most accessible and knowledgeable voices of “new biology”. The science is called epigenetics – a revolutionary field that shows us how the energy of consciousness is as important in shaping life on earth as DNA and chemistry. In this original author adaptation, Dr. Lipton brings his clarity, insight, and humor to unveiling a profound change in how we perceive the way life works, including: How environment, including our thoughts and emotions, controls the character of every cell Quantum physics and life: the key to understanding the bigger picture of how “mind over matter” works Cooperation and evolution: moving beyond the “selfish gene” theory to see that a natural trend toward harmony literally shapes the biosphere Why the oft-dismissed placebo effect is really the most powerful healing tool we have, and much more As scientists have mapped the human genome, it has become clear that there are important aspects of life that defy our traditional models of evolution. The “missing link”, according to Dr. Lipton, is consciousness. With The Biology of Belief, listeners join this groundbreaking researcher to learn how this new science radically alters both how we understand life on earth and how we choose to live.
